Parking concerns grow with Oak Cliff's Bishop Arts District

By ROY APPLETON / Dallas Morning News

A proposed rezoning near Bishop Avenue and Neely Street would clear the way for a restaurant near Oak Cliff's Bishop Arts District. And such a change would be bad for its residential neighborhood.

That's what six residents of the Kidd Springs area in north Oak Cliff told the City Plan Commission last week. Among their concerns: more noise, traffic and public parking in front of private homes.

"We've got parking problems coming out our kazoo," Pam Conley, a longtime Kidd Springs watchdog, told commissioners before they unanimously opposed the rezoning request.

No mowing at Winfrey Point this weekend - CM Sheffie Kadane

Dallas City Council Member Sheffie Kadane, standing in front of >100 supporters of the natural Texas prairie land area at Winfrey Point / White Rock Lake, announced early this afternoon there will be no mowing in order to create parking lots this weekend (for the Arboretum's Chihuly exhibit).

Even though the temporary legal agreement between residents and the Park / Recreation allows it, they won't be mowing. He is not supporting turning this unique and almost the last area of original untouched prairie into parking lots, and he is not going to let anyone destroy the two-year old baseball fields, which he credits with reviving Little League in Dallas.

He noted the deal to allow the area to be used for parking lots was a private agreement between the department and the Arboretum, which are usually not brought to the City Council for review.

Suspect(s) in custody in Lowest Greenville / East Dallas armed robberies

The Dallas Police Department just flashed a notice to Lowest Greenville crimewatch members. They are reporting at least one arrest (but BD has heard there may be two more) of a suspect in a series of armed robberies in the area.

Less than two weeks ago, shots were fired during a daring daylight robbery on La Vista Court - see story here, see police report here. And then last Friday, another armed robbery with similar suspect information and descriptions took place on Prairie Avenue near Columbia/Fitzhugh - see reports here and here.

In both cases, the suspects were driving the same white Nissan Maxima (apparently they never learned to steal a car before robbing anyone). During the second robbery, one of the witnesses managed to write down the license plate, despite being threatened with being shot for doing it.
