Keep BarkingDogs barking - help cover the expenses

Submitted by Avi S. Adelman on June 8, 2005

BarkingDog is not sure what direction this website site will take now that NSA Hunt and La Patrona Medrano - along with the rest of the usual suspects at City Hall - are in power, but someone has keep their feet to the fire. BD has no intention of backing down or going away, we're just gonna reduce the publication schedule a bit.

We have moved the site to a Content Management System (aka blogging software). Most of the techie stuff is behind the scenes, but it allows BD to post stories from anywhere, categorize stories, and save valuable webserver space. There are still a few bugs , but we are getting them fixed.

This kind of website does not come cheap, and that is why BD is putting out a request for support funds. If DMagazine's Frontburner can hold an online fundraiser for a for-profit enterprise, BD has no problem doing it for a non-profit enterprise.

The old stuff (1999 - April 2005) is archived and searchable, but we will move the files over to the new system – someday.

Here are the biggest expenses we see for the next year (about $1,000 worth)

  • A new emailing system that will avoid issues keeping the email notifications from getting to some of our subscribers some of the time due to spam filters.
There are nearly 1,500 names on the mailing list – you can be sure that the changes at City Council will bring a jump in subscribers (for the record, the site has about 500 hits per day – not bad for a neighborhood site).
  • Website hosting fees
  • Domain name renewals
  • Graphic design and Content Management Software
  • DSL line
  • Databases and information from the City - crime stats, arrest reports, etc

Except for BD’s other sites (shameless plugs – AviAdelman.com and DallasCreative.com), Alligator Café (best Cajun food in town!), and local sites like DPD crimewatch, we won’t post paid advertising. Besides the tech issues, it gets too messy on the screen.

If you are offended by this request, why are you reading this website? BD never ever claimed to be politically correct or rolling in cash.

A few of your neighbors helped pay for StrongArmMayor.com at the end of last year. And look at the mess that started …

BD has been footing the bills for this site for nearly six years. It may not be as expensive as what D Magazine pays for their site, but it gets close – click here for professional bio of the D Magazine website designer.

Shameless plug #2 – If you need a graphic designer (projects or full-time work) with an attitude and lots of experience, check out AviAdelman.com and DallasCreative.com

Rather than go with an online form and credit card stuff, BD is making it really easy. Mail your checks to our secure PO Box – endorsed to Dallas Creative (yes, we will declare it as income).
