DPD makes arrest for attempted run-down of officer

The DPD arrested John Robert Veloz for attempting to run down a DPD officer at the intersection of Summit and Richmond Avenues at 2am Sunday morning. Three other persons in the vehicle were taken into custody for public intoxication.

According to DPD sources and police report 0217593V, Veloz was arrested immediately after he intentionally tried to strike an officer. Veloz is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and attempting to evade arrest by driving away (link to arrest report here).

His three passengers, one male and two females, were in a very intoxicated condition (based on BD's personal observation and the arrest for public intox).

BD was on the scene moments after the incident occurred and rolled video for about 15 minutes. Due to technical issues (read: we forgot to turn on the microphone) the tape runs silent.

Veloz is currently being held in Lew Sterrett and was arraigned late Sunday morning; no bond was set (jail record link).

Update 7/14: The DPD report states the incident started on the 1900 block of Lower Greenville. A neighbor living close to the Richmond/Summit intersection where the video was shot tells BD the arrest was extremely weapons-intensive with lots of (ignored) commands for the passengers to exit the vehicle. It's not obvious in the first few frames of the video, but the officer of the right was carrying his DPD-issued shotgun back to his vehicle.
