Lower Greenville Avenue sees more bars close

Ken Kalthoff, NBC5i

DALLAS -- Two more Greenville Avenue bars have joined about half a dozen others that recently shut down, NBC 5 reported.

Critics of the bars, like activist Avi Adelman, said the closings signal a long sought change for the strip as they want to see the bars replaced with other businesses like restaurants to draw a new kind of crowd.

Hoping to see bars close, for years, Adelman has been pushing city enforcement of zoning rules, liquor laws, and expanded resident-only parking on side streets clogged from bars.

"That's always a bad time down here, with several thousand people all leaving the bars a one time," Adelman said.

Alex Salinas, the owner of the upscale new Ibero restaurant on the strip, said he figures he is a trailblazer.

According to DPD sources and police report 0217593V, Veloz was arrested immediately after he intentionally tried to strike an officer. Veloz is charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and attempting to evade arrest by driving away (link to arrest report here).

His three passengers, one male and two females, were in a very intoxicated condition (based on BD's personal observation and the arrest for public intox).

BD was on the scene moments after the incident occurred and rolled video for about 15 minutes. Due to technical issues (read: we forgot to turn on the microphone) the tape runs silent.
