The cost of doing business, Lower Greenville-style

BD's been pulling records from the DPD and Building Inspections so we can get an accurate snapshot of how bad things are getting on Lower Greenville. And everyday we unearth a new gem of information that proves how the City is getting bent over the pool table and whacked by the scumbar operators.

Today's example - Anti-noise citations. The DPD issues tickets based on either residential complaints or personal observations as they walk the beat.

It sucks (financially) to own a bar on Lower Greenville

After nearly six years of watching - and walking - Lower Greenville, BD has always wondered; How do the scumbars make a profit on just six hours of heavy business a weekend. Most of these places are only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

For a few years, BD would pull Texas sales tax reports and calculate Mixed Beverage sales (the hard stuff) for area bars as compared to other businesses in ZIP Code 75206. That got kind of tedious after a few years.

But recently BD asked the state for a database showing sales tax reports from January 2000 through August 2006. This kind of data would help show long-terms trends for the area.

BD does not pretend to be an Excel wizard but after showing our numbers to people who are, there are three conclusions we all agree on

It sucks (financially) to own a bar.

It REALLY sucks to own a bar on Lower Greenville, and

You gotta wonder how these guys can stay in business so long without making any money

NSA goes "lawyer" on BD, demands retractions

A follow-up to the NNO Event at Tietze Park (aka the Takedown at Tietze)...

NSA Hunt ain't too happy with BD's statement - clearly attributed to a DPD officer who called Parks & Recreation that same afternoon - that she jacked the paperwork to help LGNA make the event a private party just to keep the Belmont Neighborhood Association out.

LGNA opens dog-hunting season by taking shots at BD

It's a little early for hunting wild animals in Texas, but that's not stopping LGNA from opening up dissing season on BD.

Considering all the nasty stuff they started saying even before he coordinated Belmont NA's crashing of their private National Night Out event, you gotta wonder who writes their scripts.

Even Mad Maxine could not be this creative.

They now refer to BD as "Mr. Negativity" and then they cut him off from the monthly crime stats data.

As if we can't get this stuff (not the nastiness) on our own??

BD still thinks the sushi served at the BNA table was a lot more fun than plain ole hot dogs. Gone in less than 30 minutes too.

A business we will never get "tired" of

There are very few businesses on Lower Greenville operating for 10 years or more. ZuBar just celebrated it's tenth anniversary, and The Beagle is just as old we think. And the Winedale Tavern qualifies as historic. Most of the scumbars need just one hand to count the number of years they have been operating, and they would still have to cheat.

But for nearly 30 years, by the reckoning of many residents, one small business has been taking care of its customers with great service and a product most of us need to survive.

Can you name that business??? Here's a hint - lots of water but no alcohol.
