Parking problems grow along with popularity of Old East Dallas' Henderson Avenue

By NANCY VISSER / The Dallas Morning News

Parking on Henderson Avenue on busy evenings has long been a headache, particularly for those who hate valet parking or trolling for street spots.

The crowding has worsened as the strip fills out with popular bars and restaurants from one end to the other. And last month, the problems boiled over after the city shut down six lots that were used for valet parking.

Josh Baethge, a 34-year-old office manager from Plano, summed up the sentiments of numerous Henderson patrons searching for parking on a recent weeknight: "It's all just a huge pain."

The battle over residential parking moves to Henderson Avenue

Updated July 2 - After a meeting between the property owner's attorney, neighborhood association leaders and business owners, a temporary compromise was put into place. Details after the jump

BD made the mistake of driving on Henderson Avenue about 11pm on Saturday night. Then he decided to compound the error by going around that neighborhood to see how bad the parking really is on the residential streets.

Trust me, when people say Henderson is what Lowest Greenville was ten years ago, they are also talking about the parking issues. Every side street for at least two blocks out was packed with patron cars. A few valets were spied parking customer cars on the residential streets, but we could not stop to grab parking tickets off the windshields. BD would have sworn he was back on the 2000 block of Summit Avenue in 1998, when the battle for residential parking spaces was in full rage.

Cry me a river, find me a service crew?

Two weeks ago, BD encountered this flooded service alley between 5700 Richmond and 5700 Prospect. When he called 311 to report it, the service person told him it had been reported as a broken main and crews were on the way that very moment to fix it.

Maybe we need to send a search-and-rescue team out to find the service crew?
